    It's all a bit of a tradeoff and what you're willing to share for what you get. A couple of points: - For me it wouldn't matter what phone OS I use as I run propitiatory apps for works so it has to be either iOS or Android with Google Playstore - At least with Android, un-used apps get privileges taken away after a certain time period - I can't see how having Bluetooth connectivity constantly on allows data harvesting as you generally have to input a code to connect to another unknown device for the first time? - I like free cheeseburgers from the maccas app, but hate their order machines as they're constantly out of paper 😂🤣

    I am not an expert on data privacy, but I am glad to hear that what I have been doing was the correct thing. As a rule of thumb: whatever the platforms WANT ME TO DO, I do the opposite. So if they keep nagging me to install the app, I don't. I go to youtube or fakebook via a browser. I have more control over ads and everything, so yeah. And I also tend to switch off the bluetooth or wifi when I am not actively using them. Just today I found out the DPD was sending me messages which I was not receiving (yesterday), until I turned my mobile data on. I don't know, are SMS too expensive? How does it differ whether I receive a message with wifi/data or SMS?

    • @OklopnikSilni
      @OklopnikSilni 3 години тому

      It really doesn't (technically it does, but the end result is the same). You only received it via internet because they want to save a buck on sms messages. That might seem like a jewing to you at the first glance, but multiply one single sms with a million for example

    The haircut thing drives me nuts, even though I go like 5 times per year. I've gotten into the habit of creating a new identity (name, address, email, phone number) every time I go in. Because of how infrequent I get haircuts and the turnover rate of stylists, nobody remembers me when I show up 3 months later for another haircut. Plus paying in cash really helps.

    The whole advertising network side of things isn't new in all honesty. Brave Browser already has their own privacy ad network, it's been done before. If it works anywhere close to how that works, where you can opt-out of it and keep it off of the browser, then it's fine. Not great, but fine.

    Privacy preserving ads are a good thing, because people want to monetize their stuff. But I think we already have some good projects for that and Mozilla should focus on the browser. But don't forget Mozilla money comes from Google to play the "competition".

    For the Mozilla ad thing, I know we all hate ads, but how do you expect them to pay for development? Such a massive project does take money. The only other thing I can think of is to do like Apple does with Webkit (Safari) and finance their development costs by selling another product. What could Mozilla sell at Best Buy that we would want to buy often enough to finance development of Firefox and T-Bird?

    Watermarking is only effective if its not done like the stable diffusion watermark. That one did stegnography in the image after it was done generating. Sounds like a good idea right? Except the open source people got scared of the idea and didn't implement it in their tools. And of course other faster unofficial implementations also didn't implement it. So the images I generate don't have the watermark at all.

    Microsoft already steals all of your personal data (assisted by Windows Defender) to process all of it in their data centres, which costs them money in hardware and power bills. Recall is an additional "kick in the nuts" to their -suckers- users because it makes a lot of that processing happen on the client side. When you are talking about huge amounts of data going back and forth, the cost savings for Microsoft would be huge making the users pay for cost of the hardware to locally process that data and the increased power costs in doing so. Incidentally, the same is true for Javascript. Back in 1992, I could render web pages over a dial-up modem on a Commodore Amiga A1200 running at 14 MHz and with 8MB RAM - processing simple HTML and a few small images does not need much computing power. However, if you run a data centre serving millions of pages an hour, Javascript lets you offload a lot of the processing to the client side and thus your own running costs decrease. Not to mention that Javascript also makes my browser do the hard work to download ads that I don't want in the first place. Javascript also makes hardware vendors very happy too as users have to keep buying more powerful hardware. And that, my friends, is why evil corporations can both "have their cake and feast ravenously upon it".
